Tour to Katasraj temple کٹاس راج مندر

The Katas Raj Temples near Chakwal in Punjab province of Pakistan are attributed to the eras of the Hindu Shahis (kings) dating from about 615-950 CE and are dedicated to Lord Shiva. As such they constitute one of the most important Hindu pilgrimage sites in Pakistan and are still in use to this day by members of the Hindu community both in the country and those who make the journey there every year from abroad.

KATAS RAJ IN MYTHOLOGY

It is believed that the site was visited by the Pandawa brothers of "Mahabharta" fame and this complex of temples was constructed to commemorate their visit. It is said that this is the region called Dvaitavana in the epic and here is where the Pandawas lived during their exile and also where the series of questions occured between the Pandawas and the Yakshahs. The location of the Sath Ghara or Seven Temples is said to be the place where the Pandawas made their home during their 12 year exile.

A Brahmanical story relates this site directly to Shiva, whose unconsolable grief at the death of his wife Sati led to a rain of tears which formed two pools of water, one at Pushkara near Ajmer and the other at Katas.

ARCHITECTURAL HIGHLIGHTSPrior to its Hindu roots the site held a Buddhist stupa said to have towered 61 m (200 ft) in height with ten streams around it as described by Alexander Cunningham, the first Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, in 1872-73 CE. This verified the account of the Chinese pilgrim XuanXang who had visited this region during the 7th century CE and described the various Buddhist sites on the subcontinent.

According to Cunningham, the complex of 7 temples that sits at the highest point on the site is the most important part of the site and echoes the architectural style of the Kashmiri temples of the Karkota and Varma dynasties who ruled from 625-939 CE. These temples have certain defining characteristics such as dentiles, trefoil arches, fluted pillars and pointed roofs which are present in most of the temples that are found all along the Salt Range foothills. The main building material is soft sand stone which is plastered over.

Katas Raj thus has a collection of buildings and ruins that stretch in an unbroken line from the Buddhist era down to British rule, thereby, preserving at least 1500 years worth of history in that particular space.

LegendsThe Katasraj temple complex is believed to date back to the Mahabharata era. Many legends are associated with the temples. The five Pandava brothers, heroes of the Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata, stayed here for four of the 13 years they spent in exile. The lake in the complex is believed to be filled with Shiva's tears thus have magical powers and is supposed to be where Yudhishthira defeated the Yaksha with his wisdom, bringing his brothers back to life.

Another legend involves the death of Shiva's wife Sati; the story goes that when she died he cried so much and for so long that his tears created two holy ponds - one at Pushkara in Ajmer(India) and the other at Ketaksha(Pakistan), which literally means "raining eyes" in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Ketas is derived. Another version of the legend mentions the two pools at Katasraj and Nainital.

Yet another version of the Shiva legend involves the death of Shiva's horse Katas instead of that of Sati his consort. Some legends also state that very first Shiva Ling (Sihv-Ling) was in Kattas. some old manuscripts also consider Katas as the janam bhoomi (birthplace) of Hindu incarnation Rama, as well as that of Ayodhya; but this has become quite controversial.The oral tradition by local Hindus never mentioned it as being Rama's birthplace or celebrated in annual rituals.

A man never forgotten (Sir Ganga Ram)

Governor of Punjan Sir Malconlm once wrote for some one “ He won like a hero and gave like a saint” that person waz also called by “ the architect of modern Lahore” by the people . Yes that person wan indeed Sir Ganga Ram one of the pioneer engineer of Lahore.

A few days ago I went to the round of walled city spend some time with my old friends that are not able to walk after that I went to the Samadhi (tomb) of great person of Lahore Sir Ganaga Ram. I knew that he had died in july 1927 in London but his ashes had been brought back to his beloved Lahore, with some dispersed of Ganges . Moslty the navtive don’t know about the Sir Ganga Ram except they know that he was just Hindu Alas! What he done the contribution for Lahore no body knows about it . 

I stopped my bike out side his tomb local people stared me like a stranger because I waz new there but after complete my scan a guy jumps and said “ O Adil Lahorei Tonga wala “ I said lolz yes i am proud to be know about my identity “Adil Tonga wala “

After spend time with local’s I entered to the tomb Samadhi I waz simpy shocked that the samdhi irself waz being uses a stable by the caretaker . The marble slab of the samadhi had been broken at several places and the reek and the shit of animal insight the tomb was intolerable.

While talking with Natives i collected the info that this structure was relatively new and that the original was destroyed during the uprisings in 1992 following the demolition of Babri Mosque in India .One of the oldest man told me that even though it was not a Hindu temple and that Sir Ganga Ram had done a lot of for Lahore, oldest man told me that old structure was so beautiful there was water tank around and it took them two days to just break into the dome. Alas police didn’t stop them and rather stop the attack on this tomb.

Yes we are so ridiculous and unappreciative as a civilization that we did not even spare form our temper the person who practically made modern Lahore and left most of this fortune for the benefits of Lahorie’s. We simply forgot the contributions of Sir Ganga Ram. He founded the sir Ganga Ram free Hospital in 1921 . The Sir Ganga Ram house in Lahore as knows as Nabha House was the first home of the Hailey College of Commerce ,that he gifted by Lady Maclagn School for Girls and that he built the Renala Khurd Power Station out of his own money . This is of course in addition to forgetting that Sir Ganga Ram supervised the construction of almost everything which is iconic in British Lahore, the General Post Office (GPO) the Museum, Atchison College , Mayo Schools of Arts (NCA) and model town among others.

It also shows the recurring patterns in our society. Just as both Muslims and Hindus went on a rampage against each other in 1947, the destruction of the Babri Mosque in 1992 elicited the same rage. But, perhaps, all this shows we are not a ‘society’ in the sociological sense after all. Maybe, we are just a bunch of self-seeking, often bloodthirsty, illiterate people who mainly keep on destroying our own life and surroundings. The irony of Manto’s story of 1947, about the statue of Sir Ganga Ram being brought down on the Mall and the person injured during the process being ‘rushed to Sir Ganga Ram hospital’ is still certainly lost on people here. Perhaps, there is no need now to repair or care for his tomb; Sir Ganga Ram should have thought of better use of his money.

Colors of Dewali in Lahore (2014)

The dewali festival waz held in Balmik Mandir Lahore last night Mithai, prayers and fireworks are a part of the Diwali festivities taking place in Lahore city . I waz invited by my friends but due to some work can't reach early but took some pics as much i can
